Communication is defined as the process of understanding and sharing meaning. The communication process can be broken down into a series of eight essential components and each of these plays an integral role in the overall process.
- Source: The source imagines, creates and sends the message. It encodes the message by choosing just the right order or the best words to convey the intended meaning.
- Message: It is the stimulus or meaning produced by the source for the receiver or audience.
- Channel: The channel is the way in which a message travels between the sender and the receiver
- Receiver: The receiver receives and decodes the message from the source.
- Feedback: Feedback is the response or message the receiver sends back to the source.
- Environment: It is the atmosphere, physical and psychological, where you send and receive messages.
- Context: It involves the setting, scene and expectations of the individuals involved.
- Interference: Also known as noise, is anything that blocks or changes the source’s intended meaning of the message.
