What is IGNOU?

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), founded in 1985, is the largest distance education university in the world, enrolling over 40 lakh students. Situated in New Delhi, it operates through 67 Regional Centres and numerous Study Centres. In Kerala, there are three Regional Centres : Cochin, Trivandrum, and Vatakara. IGNOU is known for its continual updates and implementation of various educational policies like NEP and FYUGP.

IGNOU’s MA English Literature (MEG) Program

IGNOU offers an MA in English, known as MEG. The program consists of 19 subjects, from which students must complete 8 subjects in two years – 4 each year. It provides flexibility, allowing students to complete the program within 2 to 4 years and offers a total of 64 credits through theory, practical, and project components.

Structure of the MEG Program
  • First Year : 4 courses (1 compulsory and 3 optional) with 8 credits each.
  • Second Year : 4 courses (1 compulsory and 3 optional) with 8 credits each.

 

The program also allows for a choice-based time schedule and provides additional time for students with disabilities.

Compulsory and Optional Subjects
  • First Year Compulsory : MEG 5 – Literary Theory and Criticism
  • Second Year Compulsory: Choice between MEG 4 – Aspects of Language or MEG 15 – Comparative Literature

 

In total, 3 subjects are compulsory out of 19. The remaining 16 optional subjects are divided into five modules:

  • Module 1: British Literature
  • Module 2: Writings from India
  • Module 3: New Literatures in English
  • Module 4: Writings from the Margins
  • Module 5: American Literature

Assignments in IGNOU MA English

Assignments form a crucial part of the continuous evaluation process, contributing 30% to the final result. Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA) must be submitted within specified due dates. Failure to submit assignments can result in the cancellation of the Term-End Examination results. Students can download assignments from the Student Zone on the IGNOU website.
